Rep. Chris Smith and Plumsted Township Mayor Ron Dancer today hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the official opening of Plumsted Township’s new Senior Citizens Meeting and Activity Room. Mayor Dancer, who also serves as Assemblyman for Plumsted’s legislative district, credited and thanked Smith for federal funding totaling $125,000.
“The enthusiasm shown by Plumsted Township seniors for this new meeting/activity room clearly demonstrates the need for this designated senior facility,” said Smith. There are over 1,200 seniors (people over 55) living in Plumsted Township according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The project, which has a new handicapped accessible elevator to provide easier access to the senior facility, includes a versatile activity and meeting area with an attached kitchen.
Smith said,
“This well-designed space will give seniors a specific location for a variety of programs and activities including meetings, club events, and health screenings.” Seniors had been using several locations for these services.
Some private donations from the local community were also used to create the new senior facility.
Smith noted that his office has spearheaded federal funding to a number of senior citizen facilities in the fourth district, including ones in Hamilton, Robbinsville, Florence, Hightstown, and Trenton.
