Congressman Chris Smith announced today that a federal grant has been awarded to an Ocean County fire company by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
“Members of Plumsted Township Fire District No. 1 plan to install a much-needed generator in their firehouse,” Smith said.
“This grant of $38,000 will help them be ready even during power outages, which of course is when the public often calls upon them for help.”
The company is comprised of nearly 50 volunteers and is headquartered at the fire house on Main Street in the New Egypt section of the township.
DHS's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration, determines grant recipients. This award is made under the 19th round of the Fiscal Year 2008 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program.
The Congressman voted to create the grant program in 2000 and is a member of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus.
The AFG program is part of the nationwide effort to modernize the preparedness and capabilities of local firefighters to respond to fire and fire-related hazards. The program has provided over $2.7 billion to first-responder organizations to purchase response equipment, personal protective equipment and vehicles.
“The federal government has an important role to play in helping our firefighters and first responders who are on the front lines every day helping people in our communities,” Smith said.
“We are grateful for the sacrifices they and their families make to protect our communities. We must continue to work at all levels of government to make sure our first responders have the equipment and resources they need.”
Grants are awarded via a competitive process overseen by experienced fire service experts. AFG grants are awarded to applicants whose requests best address the priorities of the program.
