Congressman Chris Smith, Trenton Catholic Academy President Sr. Dorothy Payne and Lower School Director Ann Reap today joined Cablevision’s Power to Learn program to recognize students at Trenton Catholic Academy in Hamilton, NJ who are now certified as “Internet Smart.”  Power to Learn is a multi-faceted initiative dedicated to integrating technology into education.  Its signature initiative, Internet Smarts, provides students with curriculum and tools designed to teach safe and appropriate Internet usage.

    At the event, students at Trenton Catholic Academy tackled the subject of “Internet Safety,” discussing how students can act responsibly when they go online.  Following welcoming remarks by Congressman Smith, Assemblyman DeAngelo, Trenton Catholic Academy President Sr. Payne, Lower School Director Reap, and Cablevision’s Vice President of Government Affairs Adam Falk, students gave a Power Point presentation that focused on “Social Networking.”  A Q&A session followed.  Congressman Smith then congratulated the students and signed a large Internet Smarts certificate for the school, with student presenters signing a large pledge.

    Congressman Smith applauded Cablevision’s Internet Smarts program, saying, “The Internet has opened up a host of opportunities for students today.  When used responsibly, it is a wonderful resource.  Programs such as this help equip students with the knowledge necessary to ensure a safe online experience.” 

    Trenton Catholic Academy President Sr. Payne noted, “In today’s world, technologies are being introduced at a rapid pace.  Expression through these tools is the norm, but students need guidance when it comes to responsible online behavior.  I applaud Cablevision and Power to Learn for bringing Internet Smarts to our students.”

    “Thanks to Power to Learn, our students are more confident when interacting with others online and have a better understanding of what constitutes appropriate Internet behavior,” added Lower School Director Reap.

    Adam Falk, Cablevision’s Vice President of Government Affairs, added, “Power to Learn maximizes the benefits of technology and makes learning come to life in ways that were not previously possible.  Through our Internet Smarts program, we offer the latest information on responsible online usage.  The students today gave a wonderful presentation and I am sure that everyone here will enjoy a safer online experience thanks to their efforts.”

    Power to Learn is a multi-faceted initiative dedicated to integrating technology into education, providing students with curriculum and tools designed to teach safe and appropriate Internet usage.  This special event was focused on the students’ use of Power to Learn’s Internet Smarts online case studies that can be found on www.powertolearn.com.  The students worked through the Internet Smarts lessons and multiple case studies on online safety topics including Cyberbullying, Social Networking and Copyright Fair Use.

    Power to Learn’s Internet Smarts program provides a forum for teachers and parents to work with children on appropriate and safe Internet usage.  Online, interactive case studies explore important topics on Internet use at school and at home, allowing students to examine issues affecting schoolwork, class papers, entertainment activities and online safety.  Additionally, students, classes and schools can become certified “Internet Smart” by using the family resource booklet “Internet Smarts: Safeguarding your Children in Cyberspace,” which provides parents with quick, but important, tips and suggestions.
