As China prepares for a once-a-decade transition, there seems to be no shortage of problems its new leadership will face -- from the economic slowdown, rampant corruption, ethnic unrest, a growing rich-poor gap, migration pressures, environmental pollution and ideological disillusionment. The Washington Post asked influential thinkers in China and the United States for their advice to Xi Jinping and others in China's next generation of leaders....

China's noble people are like people everywhere. They yearn to be free. Ensure fundamental human rights — for women brutalized by forced abortion and involuntary sterilization, for religious and ethnic minorities, for workers and the disabled. Free Liu, Gao and other political prisoners. The number of Chinese over 60 will triple to 35 percent of the population by 2053. Heed the warnings of Chinese demographers on the consequences of the one-child policy. Skewed gender ratios resulting from tens of millions of “missing daughters,” too few new workers and too few family caregivers will derail economic growth, social stability and prosperity.
