  • Veterans Affairs Committee member James Guerrieri, an Army vet from the Vietnam War, speaks with Cong. Smith, former chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Veterans' Committee.

Congressman Chris Smith (NJ-04) joined the Middletown Veterans Affairs Committee and local officials Wednesday to inspect one of the first street signs installed to pay tribute to fallen veterans.

Nearly 30 signs will be added to township streets that honor our fallen men and women in uniform serving from World War II to present.

The commemorative sign includes the soldier’s full name, an American flag, branch of service, campaign served and a gold star in honor of their mother. (A gold star signifies the soldier was killed in action.) The Veterans Affairs Committee is working with Committeeman Anthony Fiore and Public Works Director Ted Maloney to install all the street signs before year’s end.

The Veterans Affairs Committee is looking to contact families of Middletown’s fallen war heroes. Family members are encouraged to call (732) 787-8510 for more information about the project.
