Iran DealSmith Asks Obama Administration: ‘Where is the Enriched Nuclear Material?’Top US Enforcer of Deal Admits They Don’t Know
Under a focused line of questioning by U.S. Representative Chris Smith (NJ-04) at a hearing on Iran nuclear deal compliance earlier this week, U.S. Ambassador Stephen D. Mull, Lead Coordinator for Iran Nuclear Implementation, admitted that the Obama Administration does not know the whereabouts of 25,000 lbs. of nuclear-enriched material required to be transferred from Iran to its ally Russia as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (i.e. the Iran Deal).
“This is an outrageous and unbelievable situation. Not only was it questionable in the first place for Russia–a close ally of Iran–to be the repository for that nuclear material, but apparently there is no requirement under the agreement the Administration negotiated for the Russians to notify the International Atomic Energy Agency or any of the negotiating nations about where the nuclear material is, where it will be stored or under what conditions it will be safeguarded,” Smith said. “This cannot be allowed to stand.” Ambassador Mull said the Iranian nuclear material currently is believed to be on the Russian ship that loaded it in the Iranian port, but he did not know where that ship is now, where this material is destined to be stored or whether the nuclear material is still on board.
