Press Release

Smith Statement After Huawei Indictment

f t #
Washington, Jan 29, 2019 | comments

Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), former chair of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, issued the following statement on Tuesday after Chinese telecoms company Huawei was indicted by U.S. prosecutors:

"Huawei is effectively an arm of the Chinese government and is working hard on behalf of the Communist Party to corner the global market on vital technologies.  We cannot allow Huawei, ZTE, drone maker DJI, or other companies to embed their technology in U.S. government systems or critical infrastructure, or subvert U.S. sanctions on countries like Iran and North Korea.  I applaud the Trump Administration’s robust stance against China’s unfair trade practices and in protecting U.S. national security. I will continue to work to protect U.S. citizens from cyber-attacks, and to counter threats to U.S. national interests from authoritarian countries."

Smith is the author of HR 6010 on Chinese influence operations, which he intends to reintroduce in the new Congress in expanded form.
