CBS 12 News Report on Smith Letter about Student's Death'NJ congressman pushes for answers in GCCC football player's death'

f t #
GARDEN CITY, KS , Mar 26, 2019 | comments

A New Jersey congressman sends a two-page letter to leaders at Garden City Community College, seeking answers into the death of a GCCC football player in August 2018.

The family of that player, Braeden Bradforth, says they still have many unanswered questions surrounding the 19-year-old's death.

The Garden City Telegram reported a teammate found Bradforth in his dorm on the night of Aug. 1 in medical distress.

Bradforth, a New Jersey native, was transported to St. Catherine Hospital where he died about two hours after he was found.

Last August, GCCC Head Football Coach Jeffrey Sims said doctors believed a blood clotting issued led Bradforth to have a heart attack.

According to the autopsy, Bradforth died of a heat stroke.

In the letter from Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) to Garden City Community College, Smith asks for the college to conduct an independent investigation into Bradforth's death.

"What he's asking for is not over the top. As Congressman Smith said, this should be precedence, set a precedence, do that right thing by this family," the attorney representing Bradforth's mother says."That's what the school promised. They promised transparency. They've provided anything but transparency."

Garden City Community College says its president, Ryan Ruda, will reply directly to the congressman's letter and cannot comment any farther on the case. The family's attorney says Bradforth's mother has not filed a lawsuit in connection with her son's death, but that is not out of the question.
