*** Congressional Hearing Set for Weds., Oct. 16 ***Reps. Smith, Suozzi to Testify on Proposed ‘Sami’s Law’Legislation Aims to Improve Ride-Share SafetyBipartisan legislation named to honor Samantha “Sami” Josephson—a senior at the University of South Carolina from Robbinsville, N.J. who was kidnapped and brutally murdered by a man pretending to be her Uber driver earlier this year—will be taken up Wednesday by the House Subcommittee on Highways and Transit at a hearing entitled “Examining the Future of Transportation Network Companies: Challenges and Opportunities.” Sami’s Law, which would establish needed protections for ride-share customers across the country, is authored by Republican Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) with lead Democratic cosponsor, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) in the House. Smith and Suozzi will address members of the Subcommittee as the lead witnesses on a panel. The subcommittee is chaired by Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC). Sami’s Law will require enhanced vehicle identification procedures to create a safer environment for ride-share drivers and customers and to make it harder for those with ill intent from impersonating drivers.
