'Uber reports more than 3,000 claims of sexual assault by drivers in 2018'

NEW YORK, NY , Dec 9, 2019 | comments
  • Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) joined Fox News anchor Ed Henry, left, and Gary McNamara, right, Chief of Public Safety at Sacred Heart University, this weekend to discuss Sami's Law. ( Dec 7 2019)

  • Congressman Chris Smith authored Sami's Law, a federal rideshare safety bill, named after Samantha Josephson, a resident of his district and a University of South Carolina student who was killed by a someone posing as her Uber driver.

Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) joined Fox News Channel anchor Ed Henry, host of America's News HQ, on set in New York regarding bipartisan legislation named in honor of Samantha “Sami” Josephson—a senior at the University of South Carolina who was kidnapped and brutally murdered earlier this year by a predator pretending to be her Uber driver.

Sami’s Law, which would establish needed protections for ride-share customers across the country, is authored by Smith (NJ-04) with lead Democratic cosponsor, Rep. Tom Suozzi (NY-03) in the House, HR 4686. In the Senate prime sponsor Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) introduced a companion bill as S. 1871.

Sami’s Law will require enhanced vehicle identification procedures to create a safer environment for ride-share drivers and customers and to make it harder for those with ill intent from impersonating drivers.

Smith said the idea for the legislation came directly from Sami’s greiving parents—Seymour and Marci Josephson—who began advocating for federal and state legislation to better ensure that no one else loses their life or gets assaulted by a rideshare driver or a predator who pretends to be one.
