Rep. Chris Smith (R-Manchester) issued the following statement on the continuation of Social Security and Medicare in the event of a government funding lapse:

            “Social Security, along with Medicare, is a sacred trust that I have consistently fought to preserve. I have long voted to protect Social Security and Medicare and I will continue to fight for New Jersey’s Seniors and ensure they received their hard-earned benefits.

            In the event of an appropriations lapse, provision of social security benefits will continue.

            As stated by the Social Security Administration, ‘We will continue activities critical to our direct-service operations and those needed to ensure accurate and timely payment of benefits.’”
