  • Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) meets with Gilad Erdan—the Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations—in Washington, DC on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), Co-Chair of the House Task Force for Combating Antisemitism, today met with Gilad Erdan—the Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations—to discuss the rampant antisemitism at the United Nations and the need for continued US support for Israel.

“Ambassador Erdan has one of the most difficult jobs in the world representing Israel at the United Nations, which is unquestionably the world’s foremost legitimizer of antisemitism, including in its most virulent and violent forms,” said Rep. Smith, who chaired two congressional hearings this Congress exposing the anti-Israel bias that pervades the United Nations and international organizations around the world.

“Among the pressing issues we addressed during today’s meeting is the ongoing, absolute need for strong US support and close cooperation with Israel to help bring about badly needed reforms at the United Nations,” said Smith, who will be chairing another congressional hearing on the United Nations’ bigotry toward Israel in the coming months.

As Chair of the House Global Human Rights and International Organizations Subcommittee, Smith conducts congressional oversight over the United Nations. He has been appointed by the President four times to serve as the Representative of the United States to the UN General Assembly.

“The Ambassador is an extraordinarily effective voice for the Jewish state—plain-spoken, principled, vigorous and brilliant—and I look forward to continue working with him and standing with our great ally Israel,” Smith said.
