LACEY, NJ — $6 million in federal funding is coming to Lacey to extend Railroad Avenue, Rep. Chris Smith announced.

Smith said that he secured more than $20.8 million in funding for critical infrastructure improvement and humanitarian services projects in Ocean and Monmouth counties.

“This significant federal support for major construction, repair and renovation projects throughout our Fourth Congressional District will go a long way toward ensuring the continued safety of our communities as well as expanding key services for residents and families,” Smith said in a news release.

It will be a “major extension,” according to the news release, and will help to alleviate traffic congestion on Route 9 plus provide greater mobility for residents.

In Smith's letter of request where he sought the funds, he noted that “during peak travel time, the U.S. Route 9 corridor in the Township of Lacey develops heavily leaving no alternative paths to travel to other parts of the town or its neighboring communities.”

According to Smith's webpage listing his proposed projects for fiscal year 2024, “the project includes a newly paved roadway, a shared use pedestrian path, stormwater management features, etc. which will now provide a direct connection for several residential neighborhoods with Lacey Road, greatly alleviating traffic congestion along Route 9.”

“These moneys I secured for my district will also go a long way toward ensuring that elderly residents and children with disabilities have better access to the essential care and services they need and deserve,” Smith said.
