The funding, championed by U.S. Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ), was secured through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Fund as part of a broader federal appropriations bill that received bipartisan support in Congress and was promptly signed into law by President Joe Biden. Established in 1966, the BHA's 50-unit apartment building has served as a cornerstone for affordable housing in Belmar, catering primarily to seniors and individuals with disabilities. The newly acquired funds are designated for a range of urgent upgrades, including facade repairs, modernization of the building's outdated elevator, electrical rewiring, safety enhancements, and the replacement of essential amenities compromised by structural and environmental wear. Mayor Gerald Buccafusco lauded the efforts of Councilwoman Maria Rondinaro and Congressman Smith for their dedication to addressing the pressing needs of the BHA facility. "The Senior building run by the BHA is in dire need of repairs," he stated, emphasizing the challenges posed by water damage and deteriorating conditions that have adversely affected residents' quality of life and safety. Councilwoman Rondinaro, recognized for her advocacy and leadership in securing the funding, highlighted the importance of providing a safe, comfortable living environment for Belmar's senior community. "Our seniors deserve better," she remarked. The funding initiative received widespread support from local and state representatives, including NJ State Senator Robert Singer and Assemblyman Sean Kean, as well as from several Belmar organizations and community groups including: The Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh Jersey Shore, Belmar Cares, Circle of Friends and The Belmar Woman’s Club. This federal appropriation builds on previous emergency funding provided by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, aimed at addressing the immediate concerns related to the building's facade.
