Press Release

On the 10th anniversary of the Goldman Act

f t #
Toms River, Aug 8, 2024 | Michael Finan (202-225-3765) | comments
  • Rep. Smith presents David and Sean Goldman with a framed copy of the Goldman Act in 2019. Smith named the law in their honor after he personally intervened in the successful fight to bring Sean home to New Jersey years after he had been abducted to Brazil by his mother.

Rep. Chris Smith (R-Manchester) today issued the following statement marking the 10th anniversary of the enactment of the Sean and David Goldman International Child Abduction Prevention and Return Act:

“Ten years ago today, the Sean and David Goldman International Child Abduction Prevention and Return Act—which I authored to help bring home American children who have been abducted overseas—was enacted into law.

While the ‘Goldman Act’ is helping to reunite families and prevent possible future abductions, many left-behind parents have been waiting far too long to see their kids again as the U.S. State Department fails to employ the full range of powerful tools at its disposal.

At a hearing I will chair in September, we will be asking the hard questions and pressing the State Department and other U.S. officials to take bolder action on behalf of these left-behind parents, especially those whose children have been abducted to Japan.”
