Hearing set for Wednesday, July 23Rep. Smith to co-chair Congressional-Executive Commission on China hearing, “Stand with Taiwan: Countering the PRC’s Political Warfare and Transnational Repression”Tomorrow, July 23rd, the co-chairs of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) will hold their first public hearing on the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) increased acts of political warfare and repression against Taiwan. WHERE: 222 Russell Senate Office Building WHO: Co-chair Chris Smith, Chairman Dan Sullivan, other members of the CECC, and witnesses “For more than 75 years, the PRC has attempted to coercively take control of Taiwan through the draconian tactics of lawfare, intimidation, and propaganda,” said Smith, a senior lawmaker and China policy expert. The hearing, entitled “Stand with Taiwan: Countering the PRC’s Political Warfare and Transnational Repression,” will analyze and assess the PRC’s 1) “22 Articles” under the Anti-Secession Law of 2024 and their implications for Taiwanese independence; 2) “political and cognitive warfare operations” against Taiwan; 3) endeavors to suppress and stifle voices of Taiwanese opposition; and 4) efforts to malign Taiwan’s legal and academic standing within the global community. Smith said that along with the policy recommendations and testimonies of expert witnesses, the CECC will examine policy initiatives to oppose the PRC’s repressive ploys and promote legislative efforts to limit the PRC’s extraterritorial influence, such as the Transnational Repression Policy Act and the Stand with Taiwan Act. ### Contact: |
