TAPinto article on Smith's autism work'Rep. Chris Smith Welcomes Autism Advocates to Capitol Hill During Autism Awareness Month'By Jeanne Wall WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), founder and co-chair of the Congressional Autism Caucus and author of five comprehensive autism laws, earlier this month, welcomed advocates from across the country to Capitol Hill as part of ongoing efforts to advance autism research and support services. The visit took place during Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month, a time when communities nationwide focus on increasing understanding of autism spectrum disorder, elevating advocacy efforts, and highlighting the needs of individuals and families impacted by autism. Smith met with more than 100 advocates participating in the 2026 Autism Speaks Advocacy Forum & Capitol Hill Day, emphasizing the importance of continued federal investment in autism research and services.
He issued the following statement after the meeting: “…I had the distinct pleasure of welcoming over 100 Autism Speaks advocates to Washington, D.C. for the 2026 Autism Speaks Advocacy Forum & Capitol Hill Day. Autism Speaks President and CEO Keith Wargo, a constituent from Bay Head, is a critical leader in the autism advocacy community. His invaluable leadership has vastly improved the quality of life for all in the autism community. Joining him from New Jersey are many self- and family advocates, who have come to our Nation’s capital to share their stories and the stories of their loved ones.” Advocates from Autism Speaks in New Jersey and across the country participated in the forum to speak directly with lawmakers, share personal experiences, and underscore the need for sustained federal support for autism-related programs, services, and scientific research. Autism Awareness Month, also called Autism Acceptance Month, serves as a national reminder of the importance of early diagnosis, inclusive education, and strong community-based support systems. Advocacy efforts such as Capitol Hill Day are designed to strengthen the connection between families, researchers, and policymakers, ensuring that lived experiences help inform federal decision-making. Smith, a long-time leader on autism policy in Congress, has played a central role in shaping legislation aimed at improving research, early intervention, and access to services for individuals on the autism spectrum, including through his work on the Autism CARES Act.
