U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (NJ-04), Co-Chairman of the House Pro-Life Caucus, released the following statement upon news of the Pope’s passing:

“As leader of the Catholic Church for nearly 27 years, Pope John Paul II was truly a shepherd to the world visiting over 125 different countries, boldly preaching the Good News to millions, listening to their voices and having been seen by more people than anyone in human history.

“He alone was the greatest moral force of the millennium, courageously, consistently and compassionately preaching and living the culture of life with love and respect for all. He was the unparalleled champion of those who cannot speak for themselves, the poor, the disenfranchised, unborn children, the disabled, even those condemned to death, and those whose basic human rights as children of God are trampled upon by oppressive regimes.

“My wife Marie and I had the tremendous privilege of being in the Pope’s presence on several occasions, including private and general audiences, as well as participating in the official Congressional Delegation presentation of the Congressional Gold Medal in the Clementine Room of the Vatican. We were awed and deeply struck by his innate goodness, the depth and clarity in his eyes, the love that emanated from his heart, and by his powerful gentleness. Our family also attended the Mass he celebrated at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey, where he walked straight to our youngest daughter, Elyse, held her head in his hands and kissed the top of her head. It was a blessing to witness to his deep love and legendary connection with children and youth.

“Many of his most instructive messages are contained in 13 incisive encyclicals, including Evangelium Vitae, ``The Gospel of Life,'' which reminds all of us, especially those in public service, that the gift of human life is so precious, so full of dignity, that it must remain inviolable and be defended against all means of violence.

“Even while struggling with various health ailments, including complications from the assassination attempt and the effects of Parkinson’s disease, the Pope's charisma and steadfast faith shone brightly, giving hope to millions of people of all faiths. He tirelessly promoted peace, human rights, religious freedom and was easily recognized as an instrumental force in the demise of communism.

“While the world will miss his awesome presence, we are thankful for the gift of witnessing and learning from his extraordinary example and I know the world will continue to be inspired, moved and guided by this Holy and profoundly good man.
