U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (R-Hamilton) has helped Monmouth County secure more than $2 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support several housing initiatives for local citizens who are disabled, those who suffer from mental illnesses, and people and families living with AIDS.

In November 2003, Smith wrote to then-HUD Secretary Mel Martinez urging full funding for the county’s grant application. The total value of the grant is $2,242,206.

“This significant infusion of federal dollars will enable Monmouth County to continue to help those people who are most in need – the physically disabled and the sick – pay for their housing needs.”

“One project, Homeward Bound, will help people and families that are not only homeless, but who also suffer from a mental illness or substance abuse problem. Now that the federal funding has been secured, the program will soon begin providing housing, along with vouchers for healthcare services, so recipients can receive real and comprehensive assistance with basic housing and medical needs,”
Smith added.

“A second organization, OCEAN Inc. (Ocean Community Economic Action Now) will use the funds to help build a 14-unit apartment building in the county for people with disabilities. Additionally, the program will offer life skills training, job training, counseling, and other services.

“And Housing with Dignity will use the funds to help provide housing subsidies to people and families affected by AIDS. Currently, about 35 rental subsidies are provided through Housing with Dignity, and more than 100 subsidies have been awarded throughout the life of the program.”

In December 2002, Monmouth County was awarded $1.6 million in federal funding for similar housing initiatives. Smith helped the county secure this infusion of federal aid by writing a previous letter of support.
