Congressman Chris Smith (NJ-4), the Co-Chairman of the House Pro Life Caucus, made the following statement at today’s 30th March for Life.
Each and every one of you here today are part of the greatest human rights movement on the face of the Earth.
You understand that abortion is violence against children and that abortion exploits women at a time of extreme vulnerability.
You understand that women deserve better than abortion – that loving, nonviolent alternatives to abortion, selflessly offered by Crisis Pregnancy Centers all across America, affirm and protect women’s lives. Surely God weeps with unspeakable joy over the kindness you show to women in pain and in crisis.
You “get it” – and judging by the most recent Wirthlin Poll showing that 68% of all Americans want unborn children protected by law, a growing majority “gets it” as well. Thank God that, unlike his predecessor, President Bush and Vice President Cheney “get it”along with a growing number of Members of Congress who are taking a principled stand for life.
It is reason for hope when our political leaders recognize that abortion is a gross violation of the most elemental human right – the right to life.
Speaking of “getting it” -- more Americans now recognize that for more than three decades the pro-abortionists have cheated. Their ill-gotten “gains” in the court and legislature have all been secured by deceit. To usher in their culture of death, they have had to aggressively foster a culture of denial, misrepresentation and deception. Denial of the humanity of the unborn child. Denial of an abortion’s grave physical and psychological consequences to the mother – they even deny the compelling evidence of the link of breast cancer to abortion.
But no lie – no manipulation – is sustainable in the face of an army of prayerful truth tellers – you, the pro-life movement.
Today, while we mourn the more than 43 million unborn babies abused, mutilated and killed by chemical poisons or dismemberment – a staggering loss of life equal to twice the number of people living in Texas, or looked at another way almost 3 times the number of people living in all of New England – and while we rededicate ourselves to the protection of life, our pro-abortion opponents across town are celebrating Roe v Wade with song and dance. How sad. How pathetically tragic.
After 30 years in the pro-life movement, both my wife Marie and I are absolutely convinced that this present darkness can only be overcome by persevering prayer, frequent fasting and hard work. Then our mourning will be turned to true celebration and joy. And, believe me, that day will come!
